Making Ornament Hooks

OK, so my first technique post is not woodworking. Well, it is hard to do JUST woodworking in my shop. Especially when it is Black Friday shopping day and The Queen wants to set up the Christmas tree. She had Steve over to help and he is quite the artist. I struggled just to get all of the trinket and gee-jaw boxes out of storage in the garage. And of course, there is a big shortage of ornament hooks. I contemplated the shopping crowds and immediately vanished into the shop for refuge. Then I spied just what I needed.

It was 20 gauge steel wire–perfect. I cut a piece 2 1/2 inches long.

With a screwdriver held securely in the vise, I used the shaft to form a perfect hook.

Then I used the needle nose pliers to fashion a nice hook for the ornament end.

And the hook was done. All that was left was to repeat two dozen times. I do not have a clue where the old hooks went, but I saved the day with these.
